NCAD Degree Show Work, 2010
06/08/2010This work was part of my final year studio practice in NCAD. It includes an installation of copper plates displayed on the wall as a panorama, macro digital photographs of sections of the copper plates (lambda prints mounted on dibond) and a High Definition video piece.
The work relates to the increasing environmental damage seen throughout Africa and the world. It is based on satellite imagery and aerial views of such destruction. The main focus is the Rift Valley in Kenya where increasing forest destruction and land erosion has left the lakes and rivers vulnerable, as well as the many people who rely on this water. The macro photographs of the 'copperscape' relate to certain areas in the Rift Valley which have suffered recently from drought and flooding. The copper plates have been etched and eroded using ferric chloride acid while protecting certain areas with bitumen, the 'copperscape' has evolved and degraded over time by this process. All the colours have developed naturally as a reaction to acid and oxidation in the air.
